Wang Xizhi

321 – 361

The sage of calligraphy

Landmark is level 2 of 4 in the China Hall of Fame: a first that opened a door, or the pre-eminent figure of their generation in this country. See how the levels work.

Why they are here

A calligrapher of the Eastern Jin dynasty revered as the greatest in Chinese history, whose Preface to the Orchid Pavilion Collection is the most celebrated work of the art.

Wang Xizhi brought new grace and fluency to running script and cursive script. None of his original works survives; they are known from copies and rubbings, including the famous copies of the Orchid Pavilion preface made under the Tang.

Calligraphers in China and across East Asia have studied and imitated his writing for some sixteen centuries.
