Why they are here
A scholar, journalist and reformer whose newspapers and essays introduced a generation of Chinese readers to ideas of nationhood, citizenship and constitutional government.
Liang Qichao was a leader of the Hundred Days' Reform of 1898 and fled to Japan when it was crushed. From exile he founded and edited influential periodicals, writing in a lively new prose style that reached a mass readership.
He later served in the government of the early Republic and taught at Tsinghua University. His essays did much to create the vocabulary of modern Chinese politics.
