Kangxi Emperor

1654 – 1722

Longest-reigning emperor in Chinese history

Landmark is level 2 of 4 in the China Hall of Fame: a first that opened a door, or the pre-eminent figure of their generation in this country. See how the levels work.

Why they are here

The Qing emperor whose reign of more than sixty years consolidated the dynasty's rule and began a long period of stability and growth.

Kangxi came to the throne as a child in 1661 and reigned until 1722. He suppressed the Revolt of the Three Feudatories, brought Taiwan under Qing rule and fixed the border with Russia in the Treaty of Nerchinsk.

A patron of scholarship, he sponsored the Kangxi Dictionary, which remained the standard dictionary of Chinese characters for two centuries.
