Distinguished is level 3 of 4 in the China Hall of Fame: sustained excellence over a career, widely honoured at home. See how the levels work.
Why they are here
A largely self-taught mathematician who became one of the leading number theorists of his time and the founder of modern mathematics in China.
Hua Luogeng left school early and taught himself mathematics while working in his father's shop. His early papers won him a post at Tsinghua University and a period in Cambridge, and he later taught in the United States before returning to China in 1950.
He led mathematical research in the People's Republic and travelled the country teaching practical optimisation methods to factories and farms.
