Why they are here
A novelist and short story writer whose stories of love and survival in 1940s Shanghai and Hong Kong made her one of the most admired Chinese writers of the century.
Eileen Chang became famous in occupied Shanghai in the 1940s with stories such as Love in a Fallen City and The Golden Cangue. She left mainland China in the early 1950s and lived her later years in the United States.
Her work, long overlooked on the mainland, enjoys wide popularity across the Chinese-speaking world, and her story Lust, Caution was filmed by Ang Lee in 2007.
